How many words/pages long is a teacher's recommendation letter supposed to be?

I'm an international, and one of my teachers is asking for some sort of guideline as to how long it should be, and I'm not really sure. Can you give awesome ppl of CC help me give him some sort of min/max margin?

I'm afraid he might write up a one paragraph description that says nothing, or that he would write a 3 page long essay filled with multiple anecdotes, which might be considerably worse (idk).
