Which EC for Common App EC Essay?

Hi, I have a small question I am asking for a friend.
For his extracurricular essay, he was planning on writing about the school band, as he has had many leadership positions, awards, and put a significant amount of time into the subject.
However, his counselor recommendation mentions band, and one of his teacher recommendations is from the band director.
None of his personal essays are related to band, but he is wondering whether writing the EC essay about it would be too much focus on a single subject, and make him seem one dimensional. He could also write about a varsity sport he has participated in for three years.
Which would be the better course of action? To write about band, as it is definitely his most important EC, or to highlight his second most important?
