What to write about for College Apps?

Would writing about a personal story relating to mental health and family be necessarily a more/less genuine or stronger/weaker or more/less insightful than an essay about the "real-world" challenges and troubles of conquering academic difficulty and finding meaning through community service?

Some might judge one or the other as "common" and cheesy...

Mental health challenges of your own are something to stay away from. Don't think about sweeping topics. Think about something interesting or unusual about you that would tell admissions something they wouldn't know from the rest of your app. It can be something subtle or small. Figure out what story you want to tell, then figure out how to fit it into one of the topics.
