Summer Work Experience or Prep for AP Class?

stresstimestresstime 0 replies2 threads New Member
Hey everyone, I'm new to College Confidential.
I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm planning out my summer--I wanted to ask, which would be a better use of the summer before junior year/ultimately look better on a transcript for college?
-Doing about a month or so of work as a paid summer hire (not an internship, an actual job) at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm (where my family lives). Also important to note: I worked in the Consular Office as a summer hire last year for about three weeks as well.
OR...
-Doing a summer Spanish immersion program of some sort (I don't know specifically which program I would go to). My parents are assuming that I would learn enough during an immersion program that I would be able to test into AP Spanish come junior year, however, I'm not confident enough in my own language learning abilities to know if that would be true. I'm currently in Spanish III and my teacher recommended me for Honors Spanish IV or a Spanish IV service learning program where we would teach Spanish to first graders in town.
I spend time in both Sweden and the States because I go to a boarding school in Mass.

So it boils down to this:
Do I choose summer work experience or a shot at an AP class?
What looks better on a transcript: AP or employment?
Please help!

Then, I'll redirect this back to you. One of the reasons (but certainly not the primary reason) for attending a school with a $60K sticker price is that the quality of college counseling is generally superior to that at the local high school. So what does the college counselor say?
