    Is this a surprise?

Some colleges are open about the fact that they recalculate GPAs and how they do it (e.g. California public universities). Others are known to do it, but do not reveal how. Presumably still more do it without publicly saying that they do. Colleges that use self-reported academic record probably do, since the courses and grades are delivered to them in standardized format that makes recalculation trivial (unlike colleges that want transcripts and do the conversion themselves).

But some may not recalculate GPAs. For example, Texas public universities generally use class rank instead of GPA. Some colleges are said to just holistically look at the record (probably easier for super-selective colleges that just need to look for all or nearly-all A grades in hard courses than for colleges with more mixed admit classes).

Exactly. With all of the various weighting schemes, did anyone think they just compared absolute numbers?

Many schools we’ve spoken with have been quite open about this, sharing how they do it.

Our school’s top weighted GPA’s are in the 5.8 range - we’d have a lot more kids at the top schools.

In other breaking news, water reported to be wet and Pope reported to be Catholic.
