it doesnt have to be your counselor, it can be a school official like a principal or another counselor, if for some reason she hates you. But, most public high school counselors dont really know anything about their students, so dont worry about it

Is it really true that you can have your principle right this for you? I don't know my counselor but I need a rec from her, and my principal was gonna write me an additional recommendation. Can I combine the two?

My counselor was new, so I didn't know her at all. I gave her an essay I wrote about my passions and a resume so she could get to know me well enough to write the recommendation.

Of course, I later learned that the other counselor, who had been there all 4 years I was there and knew me much better (though he was never my counselor), would have written it. But I didn't ask him, because I knew he had his half of the school to worry about, and didn't think he would. So the lesson of that is to not be afraid to ask other people who you know better to write the rec.

(I don't know about the rules for principals, etc.)

yeah, she wrote it based on my transcript, essay, and resume. I don't know what it said, but I still got in to the schools, so apparently it didn't hurt.

I had my superintendent write it (but I checked to make sure it was OK first with my regional rep.) He basically filled out the reverse side of the school report form, and then gave it to my counselor so she could fill out the front side of the form and attach my transcript. It's not that difficult, though I would contact the schools to which you are applying beforehand if you have any doubts about their policy.
