Does the smiley face mean you're tormenting jaug1? If not, you should know it's an english horn solo...

Yeah, I am currently playing the English Horn solo in my High School orchestra this semester. I love that piece...for obvious reasons :)

I applied to Brown as a music major. I play the trumpet, piano, and French horn. I'd love to continue all three in college, as well as learn some new instruments.

I sing, and I only applied to two B.M. programs: University of Miami and Oberlin Conservatory. The rest only offer a B.A. in Music.

    Favorite Pieces (Vocal and otherwise):
    "Sleep" - Eric Whitacre (choral)
    "Vocalise" - Rachmaninov (vocal)
"Rusalka's Song to the Moon" - Dvorak (vocal)
"Apres un Reve" - Faure (vocal)
Scriabin's Piano concerto in F# minor, Op. 20

speaking of horns, america is the only place where the french horn is actually called the french horn whereas in every other country, it's just horn. isn't like some international music organization thinking of changing it so it's always just horn?

I forgot to include the Hansen Symphony #2. It's brilliant.

Ehhh...so many kids play the violin. i bet like a fifth of all the applicants to ivies play a musical instrument, and half of those play the violin. It just ain't as uncommon as it used to be lol...but violin is so cool...in my opinion, the only other instruments that compare with the violin are the cello, flute, and oboe =)
  • Canadia1Canadia1 Registered User Posts: 518 Member
Too many play the flute, too. there aren't enough oboe, bassoon, or viola players. cello's on the fair side. I really want to play the cello (Saint-Saens cello concerto no.1 in A minor is amazing) but sadly, I play the violin just like every other asian. How good do you have to be at an instrument to have it play a role in the admissions decision? Pre-Julliard/Curtis level?

What summer music programs have any of you attended?
  • Canadia1Canadia1 Registered User Posts: 518 Member
I love how every decent musician that I know talks about where they've been like Luzerne, Encore Coda, etc. and I'm just like... no... I've never been to music camp... Although one summer before 9th grade, I went to the Prince Music Theater in Philly to be in the summer institution pit orchestra for the show peeps. We did the West Side Story. That really doesn't count since it's theater and acting.

I haven't done any specific summer music programs, but my orchestra has toured. We toured Spain a couple of years ago; it was pretty fun.
And I did Harvard Summer School a few years back and i joined their orchestra, but the following years i didn't do HSSP. However the summer school orchestra conductor kept calling me and telling me to join it, and i thought if i did it it "may" have some advantage in admissions (yeah...i know, what was i thinking?!) ...lol needless to say it got me nowhere...deferred EA!
