Diversity/visiting weekends

Some colleges offer FREE (all expenses paid) visiting weekends such as amherst, williams, and swarthmore. Do you guys know of any other ones? any liberal art OR research universities.

thanks!

Many schools offer free fly outs for URMs either in the fall of senior year or in the spring (before or after acceptances). These are the schools I know offer fly in weekends, there are likely many others as I was directing my search at the types of schools my D was interested in. Also, if you are interested in a school, you can always ask if they are willing to fly you in to see them, they can only say no. The key is to go on the college websites and register for information at any school you're interested in. Be sure to check to see if they have any offices or people dedicated to Diversity recruitment. If so, drop them a line and ask a question or two about the school, just to get on their radar screen. Being a Venture scholar or NHRP will help get your name out to schools too.

    Fall:
    WUSTL Discovery weekend
    Amherst Diversity Open House weekends
    Dartmouth Bound
    Swarthmore Multicultural days
    CMU Celebration of Diversity weekend
    Cornell Engineering weekend
Smith, Carleton, Tufts, Macalester, Kenyon, Williams, Wesleyan, Grinnell

    Spring:
    Rice Vision
    Emory Multicultural weekend
    WUSTL Multicultural weekend
    Dartmouth Dimensions
    Vanderbilt Mosaic

    You're welcome!

WUSTL made the flight arrangements and paid everything for my D to attend the Discovery weekend. But I know that wasn't true for everyone attending, there was a thread last year on the WUSTL forum that talked about it.

NHRP is National Hispanic Recognition Program. It is similar to National Acheivement but for Latinos. There are no scholarships involved but they do send out a CD containing the names of scholars to many colleges. And that's one way you get invitations to these weekends.

My D never got an invitation to the Dartmouth weekend, but we had already visited, so that may be why. Search the Dartmouth forum and there should be threads from last year, otherwise, send them an email requesting information.

As I recall, my D got direct invitations for WUSTL and Rice, but had to apply for the Amherst weekend.

TrackBabi, do you have to pay for your transportation to the Cornell weekends if you're not in one of the major cities that they provide a bus to in the NE? Thought that was the case but maybe it was somewhere else.

I actually have a question about the Diversity weekends. If I can't attend one because of scheduling conflicts, how do I let the Admissions Officer or Director of Recruitment know that I'm still interested??

Send them an email telling them about the conflict and assuring them that you are still very interested in their school. Your situation is not unusual and shouldn't be a problem for admissions.

Destination Dartmouth (Dartmouth bound) happens in the summer for prospective students and usually happens in the summer (you apply for this visit . Similar to the Amherst application). Keep in mind that most weekends were not limited to URMs.

Dartmouth Dimensions is open to all students admitted in the RD pool and they will offer financial aid (free or low cost for the trip) to students with financial need.

adding: Mount Holyoke College (focus on Diversity), Bryn Mawr (Mosaic)
