Can someone please point out something wrong with my application? I just got rejected from JHU, which was supposed to be my match/safety school, so now I'm really worried about the Ivies...

SAT: 800 CR 800 M 740 WR: 2340 combined (one sitting)
SATII: 800 Math II 800 Physics 700 Lit
Rank: 1/350
Senior Courseload: Hardest school has to offer (we only have 2 AP's though...)

Extracurriculars: Environment Club (Pres), Math Club (Pres), Debate Team (Co-Captain) +various regional awards, Global Issues Club (Secretary), 14 medals from Badminton competitions +coaching, worked at Kumon for a year, worked at university science lab for two summers

Teacher Recs: "best in 13 years of teaching"

I am an international student, but didn't apply for financial aid but still got rejected...
I am very very distraught right now...

JHU, or any top university for thy matter, shouldnt be anyone's 'safety,' especially if you're international. don't worry, your stats are excellent. you'll get in somewhere!

lol sorry if I sounded a bit conceited by saying that JHU was my "safety." what I meant was that I really was not expecting to be rejected...

hmm, seems to be a difficult year for Internationals... especially those who needed aid. However, I am an international and did not need aid and managed to get into several top 20 US schools so I'm unsure about the difference there. Which country are you from? There could be a lot of competitive applicants from your country. Also, I've always said this... do not consider a Top 20 school a safety... esp. if you are an international... but I would have predicted an acceptance. anyways, I'm almost certain that you will get in somewhere unless all you applied to was HYP.

JHU is as tough as any schools for male in science and engineering besides MIT and CalTech.

^^You'll get into an Ivy unless you mess up your application big time.

    @Professor101

    Accepted Caltech

    Rejected MIT

    Waitlisted JHU

    It's still a crapshoot apparently o.o

Yeah, I'm rather surprised you weren't accepted at Johns Hopkins. A guy in my school (smart guy, but MUCH lower stats) was accepted.

Internationals looking for aid are suffering the most after the reduction in the admitted percentage.
  • collegehappycollegehappy Registered User Posts: 712 Member
^ j camilo, he said he DIDN'T apply for aid.

Anyways, I was waitlisted at JHU and kind of surprised too. I mean, no one is a complete shoo-in, but still. I totally understand how you feel. But stay positive for tomorrow (if you're waiting for any Ivies). I was waitlisted at two colleges with ~20% acceptance rates but accepted to two schools with a sub 15% acceptance rate. Total crapshoot at this level. Good luck! I know you'll end up somewhere you love!

    steve,

your ECs, although I'm sure they were tough to do, do not make you stand out. At this level, you need more than to be a president of a club..if it's sciences, you need to be published ( abstract, poster, or paper in a peer rev'd journal ) or win a national award like intel semis, your sports were good, but I'm not sure US schools even care about badminton, the kumon gig is worthless, ...my question is ...is your school comparable to the US top HS , like Bronx HS Science, Scarsdale hs, etc...but with your val. standing and 800s you shouldn't have to worry...if you liked JHU that much, Sir William Osler was faculty at McGill. Good luck with the process !

Oh, and yes, your first post was very obnoxious. JHU can see through that sort of stuff. Surprise, surprise, surprise..

To those of you who are "surprised"....I'm not.

lol, I was about to ask the same question.

    No surprise.
