Saying that believing in religion is a way to establish your morals is kind of like saying you aren't a good enough person to figure out what's right and wrong without having it shoved down your throat by some guy in a robe.

IlikeDice -- yes, a lot of people are like that. They use Christianity as a guide, and sometimes they hardly even go to church...it's called The Bible. It's very hard to find a basis for belief without taking in the ideas of others; that's why there's religion and philosophy. What, we're just going to pull every little thought and opinion out of our asses?

Anyway, back to the topic...Atheists aren't always angry, as far as I know. Maybe it's just around where you live.

And to whoever it was that wrote about this: religion is an opium for many people who feel hopeless in life, but that's not the case for all. For somebody who dislikes stereotypes, you're making an awfully big one.

Well, let me put it this way: a smart and dedicated atheist presidential nominee would get destroyed in the polls, while an idiotic Christian would win two terms. Why shouldn't they be angry?
  • fizix2fizix2 Registered User Posts: 3,570 Senior Member
I don't think anyone who's truly an idiot would stand a chance at the presidency -- you have to be at least fairly smart to campaign in such a way as to win people over. Campaigning takes a lot of time and effort; it's not easy to get millions of people to write down your name.

(Sure, you can act stupid. But that's often just a part of the ploy, used so people think of you as a "common man." Apparently George Bush's early speeches were a lot more intelligent-sounding than his later ones...)

Neither does unfettered capitalism. The American economy is a hybrid of capitalistic and socialistic elements.

Who counters a Marx quote that doesn't directly pertain to communism with a quote (that isn't really a quote) about how much Communism sucks? What are you, five?

This thread is already very ridiculous, so it couldn't hurt to insert irrelevant quotes here and there.

Sounds like you're being a little cynical about normal, blissful atheists just trying to lead an honest life.
