College Essay Idea Good?

Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

For the prompt above I want to talk about what it was like growing up in a divorced family and an absent father due to the military. Despite this fact though we were still considered low income, because my father didn’t support us as much as he should’ve based off his income. It’s taught me about independice and how to push through despite any circumstances.

Is this a good idea or topic for this prompt?

That sounds like an optional essay, so only write about it if you really feel like this has impacted you in a large way and the person reading your application wouldn't understand who you are without that essay.
Otherwise, it sounds like an ok topic, just make sure you have a specific story/example to put in.

I think it could work. Remember it is only 650 words so be sure to keep it about you and not your parents.
