i've written some "test" essays and mu themes were said to be too cliche. like individuality and being a first generation student. what kinds of things are fresh and original?

i've read all the college essay books. they are superb. but its hard for me to brainstorm ideas on my own..

I think that the topic you have could be interesting if you put a unique twist of your own on it. If you make it interesting and unique, it can still be a good essay, but if you put the common cliches in it (writing-wise, like saying, 'I have always thought outside the box'), it will be extremely boring.
