i have a question about writing my college essay

i know many colleges prefer funny, comical essays but
can you write something that is sad?
will that be a postive or a negative?

thank you

If it's a well-written essay that reflects your personality and passions, then it should be a positive regardless of topic (within limits).

That said, while "sad" essays are fine, I would try not to be too depressing or—god forbid—angsty. You might also want to end on a positive note if that's possible or relevant.

Try to avoid dead grandma essays - but if you feel strongly that you must, then personalize the event as much as possible and don't speak in general terms.
