This week's issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education has an interesting and somewhat frightening article about Pensacola Christian College (you have to be a subscriber to read online, but: http://chronicle.com/weekly/v52/i29/29a04001.htm)
. Apparently, at this extremely conservative college in Florida with 5,000 students, students are routinely expelled for infractions such as talking to or touching (in any way) the opposite sex. Female students are not allowed to leave campus without a chaperone. Most internet sites are banned, and students aren't allowed to play video games or watch movies (even ones rated G). One student quoted in the article was expelled for hugging a male friend! Furthermore, the college is not accredited, making it hard for graduates to get jobs (or for transferring students to get credits accepted at other schools). They keep the fact that they're not accredited hidden from prospective students, of course.
I just couldn't believe that such a Orwellian place (and 5,000 students strong!) existed...kind of a scary wakeup call to the growing power of the Christian right in this country. I thought mercy and equality were Christian values..apparently not at this crazy place.
