Need help picking a major.

oaksblogoaksblog 21 replies25 threadsRegistered User Junior Member
Hello, I am having trouble deciding between a major and was wondering if you could help me. I would prefer a career that works both in and outdoors, where I could incorporate my photography, and something that I am good at is research. Unfortunately I can't go near any of the life/physcial sciences. Would take me too long and there are too many prerequisites to get to the next class. Any suggestions? Also if so, I would prefer maybe to double major if there is something similar to that major, to further the question.

Yes, not getting a lot of replies, but I like to know what some people are thinking.

    Geology? It's a "rocking" field!

You can definitely use your photography. It's got little to nothing to do with life sciences. You'd definitely be outside in great places. If you like puns like "Of quartz I love geology" this might be the major for you! (Geologists are very punny.)

You will be employed, yes, with this major.

I was looking at geology, but like I said with the sciences, its got too many prerequisites and would put me 4+ more to get a degree and I already have an associates. Thanks though.

I like the outdoors, researching things, buying and reselling, and I like landscape/macro photography. I hope to see myself somewhere living near the ocean, doing some sort of work involving both in and outdoors.

Use your research skills to find his contact info and ask him to be your mentor.

Also try to find an internship at NatGeo.

Environmental studies might have less science than environmental science or geology. Land grant universities tend to have the majors like forestry, etc. UW Madison has a major in the college of agriculture called life sciences communication.

Why not Photojournalism at a 4 year college, like @Publisher proposed? All good journalists need to have good research chops.

I thought about it. Maybe double majoring in photography and journalism. Ive just heard the worthlessness of both and that journalism is dying, and also being a journalist is not what I want to do, but I know there is other things you can do with that type of degree.

Have you considered art history? You may touch the physical sciences (organic chem) just a little bit; it will give you the chance to use your research and photography skills, plus if you are a good writer you will use that skill all the time. You can get jobs at museums which are pretty steady and may interact with famous photographs and photographers. There's also the whole art conservation world which is a really cool blend of art, science, and history.
