Living Learning Community vs Traditional Style Dorm

PabNaderPabNader 1 replies2 threadsRegistered User New Member
I have to choose between living on an LLC or at a traditional style dorm. The downsides of choosing the LLC is that the rooms are suite style (I actually really prefer communal bathrooms due to its social scene), the roommate selection is random and it is more expensive (2,5k/year +). While in the traditional style I feel like people are more outgoing, I will get to choose my roommate and is less expensive. What do you guys think? Are the benefits of living in an LLC worth it? Am I missing up on the social scene at the traditional style dorm?

I'm sure it varies from college to college and LLC to LLC what benefits there are. Does your school list what your LLC offers? I don't have experience with it yet, other than my DD'19 is going to be in an LLC this fall. She decided to do it to get into a nicer dorm and hoping it will be a calmer place than the all-freshman buildings. Any activities that are done will just be a bonus. I don't expect them to be major or give her any big advantage in her education or career. But for her the cost is the same so it was an easy choice to take the better room. She did get to choose her roommate but from a very small pool.

It sounds like you don't want to do the LLC so without any further information to go on, I would say save your money and live where you want.

I agree that it depends on which school and which LLC.

The perfect for me would be live in the LLC but with traditional style dorms with communal bathrooms. I like the Idea of being surrounded by like-minded people. Also, I´m thinking about business LLC at the University of South Florida! I´m afraid of missing out on the college experience by going suite over traditional dorm style.

Is the social scene in the communal bathrooms at USF all that? Can't say it was anything memorable at my school!

Sometimes people want to make a big school feel smaller so an LLC may be a way to do that.

It really depends on how interactive the LLC is. At my school, some are dead and just full of people who want better dorms. But some LLCs are more social I guess, with more people participating in activities or just socializing amongst themselves.

Interesting. I also don't remember anything social about the communal bathrooms. For me the only upside was that housekeeping cleaned them daily and there was no waiting. Traditional-style seems like a win for you since you want more interaction, they are cheaper, and you get to choose your roommate.
