We usually read stories about roommates who don't understand each other, but some have become a true friend forever?

Yes, two of my roommates are godparents to my kids. I'm still very good friends with about 7-10 roommates/suitemates from college.

Two of my husband's roommates are to this day some of his closest friends. One was the best man in our wedding and we all flew across the globe for the wedding of another. I'm still close to one of my roommates as well. We got along so well, we lived together all four years.

My D, while just a sophomore is definitely already best friends with roommates from last year (she was in a quad). They are all living together again in the same housing complex but in doubles (they unfortunately couldn't get another quad which was what they were hoping for).

My D'17 was in a suite of 4 roommates at community college. She has graduated but is living in an apartment with one of those roommates. They are like sisters (and look like it too), best friends, and plan on living together until they each get married (so they say they have to coordinate their weddings to be about the same time so one isn't left alone at the apartment).

I have had no contact with my freshman year roommate since the day of our last exams 40 years ago. BUT- a woman across the hall from me that year is one of my closest friends to this day, as well as a bunch of people from the floor below. So I'd have to say no on the roommate being my BFF, but yes to my "dorm mates" being BFF, despite living thousands of miles away from each other, and despite the passage of decades, and despite our lives having moved in very different directions. We have leaned on each other for support in every meaningful way.

My freshman roommate is one of my best friends, was my maid of honor, and still someone I have drinks with and/or stay at her house when I'm in Chicago. Love her! Our roommate assignment was completely random - no "roommate questionnaire" back in the day.

D2 has become lifelong friends with her randomly assigned roommate, but no one else in the family has lucked out to that degree.

I said maybe 10 words to my Freshman roommate and moved into a fraternity as soon as I could - he was very religious and the Black Sabbath/Iron Maiden posters I hung in my closet before he moved in didn’t go over well.

My next roommate, who I met in Freshman orientation, was best man at my wedding and we still get together quite often. My wife was a little sister at the fraternity and her MoH was her sophomore roommate , also a LS.
