Help Me Choose A Creative Major?

lookingxaroundlookingxaround Registered User Posts: 74 Junior Member
In short: I'm a CC transfer – 4.0 gpa, Gen-Eds completed, plenty of ECs including Student Body President and freelance photography work. I'm interested in creative fields, but don't want to choose a dated or financially irresponsible major. Thinking about a business minor as well, if I have the time. Design programs are tricky because programs are structured as 4-year degrees and are not transfer friendly.

Interests: Filmmaking/Editing, Photography, Visual/Layout Design, Technology, Drawing (somewhat), Interiors, Environmental Studies.

Not Interested in: Illustration, Animation, Video Games, Industrial Design, Fine Art (Galleries, Painting, Sculpture, etc., at least not as a major)

Based on this, what suggestions for a program would you have for me? Assuming I'm applying to universities as opposed to art schools.

If you are most interested in film, you need to look at how long the programs really take. Many are 4 year programs. If you go in with all general credits done they are still 4 years. Some don't take transfers at all. Ask lots of questions to the schools you are interested in about the time it takes a transfer to complete the program. Check portfolio requirements for film. Some dont require portfolio and some do.

@Nickih True, I sort of wrote off film because I can't afford four more years for a degree that isn't promising financially, and film is something that can be pursued without a degree. A film minor could be a possibility, but I was hoping I could just take a film course or two without majoring/minoring in the subject.

Maybe advertising / marketing / PR / social media... for example, when a team makes a print promotion / commercial ad for Visit California or Las Vegas, it combines photography / film / business / layout / environment.

@Ready5etGo That sounds like Design to me, but I'm more interested in the creative side than the marketing side.

Look at the art school at Lesley University. They also have a degree completion program that allows you to proceed at your own pace, which accepts 90 transfer credits and requires 10 classes at Lesley. You can get credit in that program for independent work or classes taken elsewhere while attending.
