Double Major

hitheshhithesh 5 replies18 threads Junior Member
I am majoring in computer science at Mich State right now. I am a sophomore. I am also minoring in econ. After this semester, i would need 3 more classes for a minor, and 7 more for a double major. I was wondering if a 4 class difference would be worth it. I feel like a minor is not really helpful in job search, and having majors in comp sci and econ could make me eligible for many jobs. A minor would be done in 4 years and double major would probably take 4.5. I would love feedback.

I don't know if my experience will be typical or atypical...I don't have a minor. Nobody has ever asked me about a minor in any job application or interview I have ever had. It didn't keep me out of grad school, and I don't think it has held me back in terms of career progression. I agree with you that a second degree could be helpful, and would be more helpful than a minor. I don't know how feasible that is for you from a financial standpoint to add another semester. Just my perspective, other's may have a very different point of view!

If it is financially feasible, I would do it. I double majored in college and recommend it to my kids. I started off as a biochemistry major and at the end of my first year, I learned from a classmate that only 3 additional classes were needed for a chemistry degree. To me, that was a no brainer. I graduated in 4 yrs and .ended up with the 2 majors and a minor in genetics. For 2 summers, I stayed on campus and took classes in order to graduate on time. My senior year, I interviewed for biochemistry and chemistry jobs. Before graduating, I was only offered a chemistry job. I was so glad that I double majored at that time. Otherwise, I wiould have ended up back at home in my small hometown with not a lot of options.
