I know it costs 80$, but why do people think it's a scam?

Have you considered asking those who say so? It looks legit to me based on the Wikipedia entry.

A scam? I was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa at my local community college. I had to have a 3.8 to qualify. Many colleges offer transfer scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members especially if your community college has an articulation agreement with them.

Same here. I was looking up info on it because I never heard of it before and I came across this page. Im in a dual-education program called High Tech Academy at a local community college and thats how I got membership. But I'm told there is a fee waiver, so thats good too.

It is not a scam. It is the community college honor society and it is totally legit. There are many "honor societies" which are scams, though - maybe you misheard?
