Musical theatre colleges that offer non MT minors?

DebrinaDebrina 4 replies2 threadsRegistered User New Member
DD (sophomore - so we have time) attends a magnet performing arts HS, and wants to major in MT and to continue Mandarin, or possibly international relations or Asian studies as a minor. She's got three yrs of middle school Chinese, in her 2nd yr of HS Chinese, did an intensive language immersion camp over the summer, and will return to the camp next summer. Just starting the college process -- looks like UMich is a non conservatory that allows MT majors to minor in the LSA, but realize this is the Holy Grail for MT majors and is a [email protected] Marymount Manhattan allows minors as well and they have one in Asian Studies which she is interested in. Any others that you can suggest?

Look for schools that offer BAs rather than BFAs for the additional curriculum flexibility your daughter is looking for.

Eckerd College offers a unique BFA 2+2 program for MT. Two years at Eckerd and 2 at Circle in the Square. They have a strong study abroad program, including winter term as they operate on a 4-1-4 calendar and a very strong East Asian Studies and Chinese language program.

James Madison allows for students to minor, and it is even possible to double major. Although, depending on double major, and AP, IB, dual enrollment credit, it may take summer courses, and/or an additional semester.

Molloy CAP21 (BFA) allows minors or even a double major if you have enough AP classes. I don't know if they have a Chinese/Mandarin major or not, but worth a look. My S is minoring in Psych and may major if he can get 3-4 classes knocked off in the summers.

NYU is one of the "usual suspects" for students who want both a BFA and an academic minor / second major. Temple is another I would look into. American University offers a BA MT and is very strong in International Relations; possibly UCLA would be worth considering but it's a very tough admit academically.

A lot of schools that don’t allow double majors do allow you to minor in anything else—TCU allows minors.
