What's the dumbest reason you applied/didn't apply to a school?

LizziePooLizziePoo Registered User Posts: 144 Junior Member
Personally, I didn't apply to Colgate because I didn't want to go to a school with the name of a toothpaste. Rediculous, I know, but that was my thought process. I never did any research on it, because I figured I could find an equal and/or better school with a different name.

& the only reason I applied to WUSTL is because I figured they would stop sending me stuff everyday if I just applied (and they did). Turns out, I got accepted, and I realllllly like that school now. I guess the marketing paid off, b/c without them irritating me so much, I would have never applied.

What about you all? any rediculous reasons for applying/not applying anywhere?

Know someone who refused to apply to Tufts, even though they are very interested in IR, because they are called the "Jumbos" ...

I also asked WUSTL to send me viewbook and application so they would stop sending me stuff! I ended up being waitlisted

Tufts - its reputation of being the school for the bitter ivy-rejected students turned me off

schools in California - back then, all the people I've met that were from CA or at least lived there were so flashy, superficial or/and had some weird points of views (mostly discriminatory) so it somehow got me a notion that almost all CA ppl are like that and didn't even want to think about applying to CA.

Yes, very stupid prejudices and stereotypes.

My worst enemy was going to go to this Ivy, and I thought this other girl I disliked alot was going to get into a top 25 southern school. I still think I made the right decision about not applying to that Ivy, but the other girl did not even get into that top 25 school.

I didn't apply to WUSTL because my mom said, "You don't want to go to college in Missouri!" :D

I have a good one. For some reason, most schools on my list began with the letter "B" so when I saw Boston University or consider giving Brown a shot.. I changed my mind because I didn't want my whole list to start with B. O_O I still have like.. four B-schools, though.

Trust me. I lived in Missouri for 14 years. That is an EXCELLENT reason for not applying to WUSTL

I applied to Simmons because the application was free.

In AP US History we were forced to memorize many important supreme court cases, one of which was Dartmouth vs Woodward. I was completely fed up with the class at the time and determined Dartmouth as obnoxious because of my dislike of history. Whoops

I applied to Wesleyan because I knew I can get in without an issue.
I suppose that's a common reason to apply, it is called a SAFETY after all, but there are absolutely no circumstances under which I would actually attend, so I don't know why I spent the money.

Same for me--didn't apply WUSTL 'cause it's in Missouri. Lol.

EDIT: Also didn't apply BYU as a safety because Youtube is blocked on campus.

So funny - the most odd reason was also for applying to WUSTL. DD submitted their online pre-app just to stop the flood of their correspondence. By Jan 1 it was clear that she had exactly zero interest in that school, we all understood that the school was over-rated due to playing cheap admission tricks. But the fee was already paid, and recs were sent, and they had no supplement , so it took only to press the button on Common App. Somehow she felt obliged to apply .
We had a moment of truth yesterday, when we celebrated DD's early acceptance to her match-safety (which she loves and clearly prefers to WUSTL) and laughed how WUSTL made us to contribute to their blown-up selectivity (as expected, without any "demonstrated interest" DD was waitlisted).

munchkin, i totally understand....i applied to Howard (an HBCU) because my scores & GPA fit in the range for an automatic full scholarship from them...i got in, and got the scholarship, but I would never go there. & what's worse, now I have everyone telling me I should, because I got a full ride. I should have kept my $45 and saved myself the trouble.

Wow, I guess I'm not the only one who noticed that a LOT of schools start with a B! Isn't that weird?! Brown, Berkeley, Babson, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Boston University, Boston College, Baylor, BYU, Bates, Bryn Mawr, Bucknell, Barnard, Bard, Becea, Beloit, and Berry. I'm sure there are others - very strange.

And munchkin3590, are you referring to Wesleyan University in CT? How can that be your safety?
