Help! Final decision: Lehigh vs Carnegie

gopirate18gopirate18 Registered User Posts: 5 New Member
By May 5, I need to decide between:

Lehigh University and Carnegie Mellon University

Both for their liberal arts school. I'm hoping to double major at either in Economics and English...but I have no idea which one to choose. I like them both - even if they are on opposite sides of the social spectrum - so their campuses won't factor into my decision. Can someone help me?

That is a tough decision. I personally would pick CMU because their Econ program is awesome.

You might want to check out some posts by Easttowest regarding humanities at CMU. The posts have nothing to do with Econ, but I believe the Easttowest was dissatisfied with the humanities departments. It might depend which way you are leaning, Econ or English.

I think CMU is the better school but doesn't have a great social scene and has an unusual student bodt.

The social life at Lehigh is much better (ranked #23 in party schools) and would have a much more outgoing student body while still a decent academic reputation.

But since you don't care about the "opposite sides of the social spectrum" and if you think you would fit in at CMU, you should go there.

That's a tough decision. For me, I'd pick Lehigh, but this has to with the fact the liberal arts are far more prominent at Lehigh than at CMU, but because you don't care about social interactions, it probably wouldn't matter you might be more isolated at CMU. But then again, CMU isn't great in English, but it's pretty darn spiffy in econ.

I'd also do CMU. I'm sure a degree in English there is worth about the same as one from Lehigh, but if you're doing Economics there's not much of a comparison, CMU is phenomenal. Social life is really what you make of it; I'm sure you could have plenty of fun at CMU. But fin. aid is something to consider. Would the schools cost the same for you?

Thank you all for your input thus far. As for financial aid, Carnegie has surprisingly given me about 2,000 dollars more in grants, and I would be going to the schools for about the same.

As for the social life, I'm not sure I'd be completely isolated. I do know that UPitt is 2 blocks down. My tour guide hinted that you can usually find a bunch of people there to hang out with if there aren't many choices at CMU. I'm counting on that ;)

CMU actually has a pretty good English & Creative Writing Dept.

CMU hands down - I can't think of any area outside of humanities where Lehigh would be better. The social life is what you make it.
