Gentrification? Transfering to lower ranked colleges

I met someone today whose son just announced that he is moving from from CMU to UTD . There are always articles about top colleges making room for transfer students, are there any statistics for reverse cases of students moving from top colleges to lower ranked colleges?

I didn't find any statistics but apparently its more common than one would imagine. Just google, "transferring out of ivy" and you'll find dozens of threads on this issue.
