Pretty shy kid. Is Mines the right place for him?

1lostparent1lostparent 8 replies2 threads New Member
For former or current students/parents at Mines, my son is a pretty shy fella, smart, dry-witted, but pretty introverted. This is a principal reason we are looking at smaller schools. Is Mines generally a friendly place that makes an effort to engage kids and pull them out? I suppose I am talking about the general disposition of the student body as well as the efforts of campus life administrators. Thanks!

My D has hung out on the campus a few times with the sports team she is being recruited for, and according to her the students are a little nerdy and very friendly. When I'm with her I see plenty of kids moving in groups and having fun. I think Mines is the type of school where if your S makes an effort he can find his peeps easily. Also, the school feels smaller than it is, so there is a lot of interaction.

A friend went to Mines about 6 years ago. Never have I met anyone so introverted and she did fine. She didn't get along with her roommate that well but it worked. She lived about 45 minutes from Golden but didn't go home all the time (but nice that she could if she wanted to), she had a few friends, met her boyfriend as a junior, and they are still together. I think Mines is perfect for a shy person. Plenty to do if you want something to do, no pressure to do things you don't want to (except to climb to paint the M on the first day - you have to do that).

That's very helpful to know. Thank you both for your reply. So we wait pensively now for admission decisions. Again thx.

My son is currently a freshman at Mines. Great atmosphere for introverted kids that love science and engineering. Even with COVID, he has made a great group of friends. Best decision to have him go to Mines.
