Do they remain the same from year to year, especially in reference to the "topic of your choice" option?

I wanted to start on some essay drafts this summer, but I don't want to write 5 essays and have all of my work be fruitless.

Yes the essay topics generally stay the same, and even if they don't there's always the topic of your choice option. The essay topics are designed so pretty much any essay will fit into at least one of the topics.

There is a preview of the 2012-2013 Common App available. The essay question prompts appear to be the same.

You mention writing 5 essays - you only need to select one of the prompts for your essay, plus the brief writing prompt:
Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences in the space below.

Schools will have their own questions on a supplemental section. Between scholarship essays and supplemental essays, my S only needed a few topics and was able to re-work them to answer most of not all of the questions.

When I was referring to writing 5 essays, I was referencing my drafts, but thank you guys for all of your help!
