Hi guys, I would love to write on a topic of my choice and I chose to write on a time I took a risk/ stepped out of my comfort zone. Please could you guys give me some advice with this choice of mine as I will applying to Yale, Northwestern, Cornell, Harvard, JHU, NYU, Boston, as an International Student.

It could be a good topic, it might not.

It depends on what you write.

I think it is perfectly fine to write about this, as long as the new “zone” you are stepping into, is not some crazy/bizarre/not-conventionally-accepted places. It also could easily become an essay full of cliches, so be careful of that.

You need to tell us what you're thinking of writing. You need to be informed re: what traits the essay is meant to convey. A forum of strangers can't tell you what those colleges look for, except this: the sort of kids who can figure it out, have done their own due diligence. It's counterintitutive to want a tippy top and not be this sort.

This prompt sounds like a version of the old "challenge prompt." It's not just stepping outside the box but how that changed things- and you- being able to "show" how you came out for the better, your new impact on others, etc. Not just proclaiming.

Show, not jus tell. Do you have an idea what those colleges look for?
