Hello! I applied as a Fall 2019 transfer as well and could use some feedback on how strong of an applicant I am.

    School: Stony Brook University
    Major: Political Science
    Credits: 59 completed
College GPA: 3.71/4.0 (one C in a Calculus 2 class I did not even need for my major). Overall, very high upward trend: 3.31, 3.82, 4.0
SAT: 1280 (probably the weakest part of my application)

College extracurriculars: President of my fraternity's chapter at Stony Brook, service trip to Honduras in partnership with Students Helping Honduras, service trip to Pinellas County, Florida in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Secretary of a club on campus that 3D-prints toys for children in the nearby hospital and daycare, Content creator (writer) for an online writing platform, TA for an Introduction to Stony Brook class, Undergraduate College "Fellow": essentially serves to be an on-campus mentor for first year students, member of the debate club, member of Model United Nations club, Member of Pre-Law Society here at the university. I also have an on-campus job at the Stony Brook business school.

    Recommendations: 8-9/10
Got three professor recommendations. One of them was a writing professor that I had during my first semester in college. She was crying when I walked out on the last day of classes. One of them was my professor for an upper-division political science class (300+ level) I had. I was the youngest student in the class and still received an A. This individual also has a PhD in Political Science. Lastly, another adjunct political science professor at the university wrote about some of my experiences in Honduras as that is her field of study.
I also got a recommendation from a former high-ranking government official who knows me and my personal life struggles fairly well.

Essays: 7/10. I do believe I could've done better on the essay. I deviated from the prompt and included that in my essay. I was very blunt about the reasons why I wanted to leave my current institution and mentioned some of the specific programs I'd like to take advantage of at Cornell. I also mentioned a specific social program that I would like to be involved in and how that would be a good way to make connections in the field.

High school GPA: 93/100 (we did not have a GPA format). Also very high upward trend: started with getting mid 80s and ended up getting over 100s in my junior/senior years.
AP courses taken: AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Human Geography, AP US History
High school extracurriculars: Over 50 volunteer service hours at my local community center, participated at the NY FED Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, was treasure in Student government, attended various math competitions, took college-credit courses in high-school (2 classes), worked at a construction management firm under as a law apprentice/cost estimator.

Hooks: First generation college student with an absent father and a deceased mother

Any feedback is appreciated! Goodluck to us all

My community college's mid-term is around mid-April and I realized the material deadline is around April 15th. Should I try to let my professor get my mid-term report done before the mid-term and send it to Cornell? Thank you

@justroks I currently attend Stony Brook as well! The feedback you get about your background strongly depends on which Cornell school you applied for; what did you apply to?

@oceansquare I'm a transfer option for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences!

@Yunbw It's totally up to you when you want to submit the midterm report, but I would recommend you have it done a few days before April 15. I'm pretty sure you've already taken some midterms in all your courses, so I would ask all your professors to write down your current progress in their respective classes.

@enviscimath11 I did few exams but no exams for official “midterm” yet, because my school started end of February, so everything is sorta delayed.

@Yunbw yeah then I would assume getting all the signatures the week before April 15 is your best bet since your semester started about a month ago. It's important you have it in by then no matter the progress of your classes.

@justroks Ahaha yeah indeed. If you'd like, you could dm me and we could talk about it?

Hey guys! I'm also applying for transfer to Cornell Fall 2019. I'm pretty relieved I found this thread so I can keep up with others in the same boat as me. I will say, I am definitely below average compared to the rest of you all, but there's no harm in reaching. I am applying to Dyson as a sophomore transfer.

    ::College Stats::

Current Institution: Virginia Western Community College
    GPA: 4.0
    Classes Taken:
    -Dual Enrollment (Unlikely to transfer)-
History of Western Civ I (3)
    General Biology I & II (4 & 4)
    English Composition I (3)
    American Government I & II (3 & 3)
    Total- 20 cr

    -Postsecondary-
Orientation to Business and Professional Services (2)
    Introduction to Business (3)
    Precalculus (3)
    English Composition II (3)
    Principles of Accounting I (4)
    *Currently taking*
    Statistics I (3)
    Applied Calculus I (3)
    Principles of Accounting II (4)
    Survey of American Literature (3)
    Principles of Microeconomics (3)
    Total- 31 cr

    Extracurriculars/Work
    Job at KFC
    VITA certified tax preparation
    About 20 hours in total

    ::High School Stats::
I graduated a year early, so that will likely hurt my chances and its part of the reason I didn't apply first year.
    GPA:
    4.4 weighted
    4.0 unweighted

    APs Taken:
    Biology (4)
    European History (3)
    Physics 1 (1), yes I know...

    SATs:
    Nov 2017- 1280
    Nov 2018- 1440

    Extracurriculars/work:
    Job at KFC
    A drug prevention club
    FCCLA
A lot of community service but I haven't kept track of the hours.

They have already told me that since one of my writing requirements was taken for high school credit, my application will be less competitive, so I'm not expecting much.

Other Places I'm Applying: UVA, UNC-Chapel Hill, William & Mary, Old Dominion University (already accepted-probably won't attend), and U Miami

If I have no luck with my other schools, I may just decide to finish my Associate's and transfer to James Madison University under the VCCS Guaranteed Admissions Agreement.

You could probably also apply to UVA and W&M through the VCCS guaranteed admission agreement. Have you looked at that?

Does anybody have access to Cornell portal? Not sure how Cornell does it, but I've received my accounts for all the other schools I've applied to.
