CUNY Required Academic Units

Hey everyone. I am currently a senior in NYC high school and I plan on attending CUNY college next fall. My question is, since DOE requires 44 credits for graduation and I currently have 54, with a couple of extra credits in English and math. I noticed that all CUNY schools want 4 units of English and 3 units of math, in total of 14 units. Can someone please explain to me how the CUNY units convert to credits? Thank you
