Anyone else gearing up to apply for 2020-21?

threegirlpileupthreegirlpileup 288 replies20 threads Member
Thinking there might be a few other people reading and lurking in anticipation of starting applications this summer and fall.

My daughter is a senior, but she is taking a gap year so will be applying next year to start school the following year. She is looking for a BFA program in contemporary with a strong choreography component.

At the moment our (ever changing, in no particular order and likely to be changed) list is

Temple
University of Illinois
SUNY-Purchase
Southern Methodist
Texas Christian
UNC-Greensboro
Virginia Commonwealth
Rugters/Mason Gross
Eastern Carolina
Ohio State
Ohio University
George Mason

My daughter is a junior- undecided about a gap year (she’s only 15). She’s hoping to apply to:
    Mills
    Scripps
    Chapman
    Cal Lutheran
    Loyola Marymount
    U of San Fran
    College of Charleston

I believe that there are only a couple requiring auditions in there, so those are her reaches. I doubt the dance programs will be exactly what she wants, but it will be a chance to continue dancing through college while she works to become a teacher, and without the high cost of her studio training. Her first love is ballet, but she also loves modern and jazz.

I had a Sr this year that was a competitive multi-genre dancer. I also have a Junior who is the ballerina. So I get to go through it all again this next year with a different list. LOL.

So my ballerina really loves OU, IU, Point Park, and SMU. Also on the list is Utah, Chapman, possibly USC, and I am open to looking at Tisch or Purchase. Looking forward to chatting with this group!

I have a junior. No gap year for her. She’s also a little young at 16. She’s applying to Penn, Duke, UVA, UNC, UTK, UGA, and NCSU.

@chb088 Looking at your list, I think we may be in the same geographical area! ;-P

Is she planning on majoring in dance? UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State don't have dance majors....

@threegirlpileup no, probably just dance for fun. She is thinking maybe Chemistry for a major, and is currently pondering Dental school after. How about yours?

I’m realizing I saw this in latest posts forum. I normally don’t frequent the Dance majors forum!

Well that explains why I was a little confused by your college list! My dd is definitely planning on a BFA dance major--thus UNC-G and VCU are on her list instead of UNC-CH and UVA.

Best of luck to your daughter! Looks like she's got a great list going.

@chb088 I came across it the same way! Makes way more sense now! There is NO way my D would be accepted into a BFA/conservatory type of school. Anyway, good luck to everyone!

My daughter is still undecided about the role ballet will play in her application cycle next fall. A year ago, she was looking for schools where there was a local studio close enough for drop in classes - now she's considering a larger role for ballet either a double major or a minor - doubtful a BFA will fit into her schedule unless the school is extraordinarily generous with IB and AP credit. Unfortunately it's been tough to find schools that are a good ballet (especially if she wants to continue pointe) and academic fit. Duke and Columbia/Barnard are probably good fits, but insane admit rates. She liked WashU pretty well. Iowa and Utah are on the list for the strong ballet and potential for double majoring. Right now I think we're going to cast a broad, broad net and hope she has more clarity on the role ballet will play over the next year.

@Darcy123 have you looked at the University of South Carolina? We have a friend who is similarly looking for strong ballet plus an unrelated academic degree program, and age recently added that to her list.

My daughter is a Junior and we just finished a few tours. She is looking into dance at Pace, Purchase, Point Park, Buffalo, and Brockport. She still has to look at Fordham and NYU.

@Darcy123 check out Dickinson College in Carlisle PA - they are right next door to Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and I think there is some affiliation ....https://www.dickinson.edu/news/article/403/advancing_dance

@cpdancermom I have a senior that just graduated and a rising senior. My recent grad looked at OKCU very seriously because she is an all genre dancer and their program is phenomenal! It is definitely a program that produces a product in that the dancers are ready for everything from audition to interview to any genre they might get into. It does lean a bit more to the Broadway style for all genres so it is a divergent path from many classical programs. The dorms and campus are fabulous and the unity on campus is great as well. I highly recommend attending their Star for the Day program as they get the full experience and it is required as part of the audition process (it can be done in conjunction with auditions as well). They are a private school and well endowed so don’t let the sticker price scare you too much. The majors dance all day and all ballet classes take lace at the same time, then all jazz, and all tap as well. They rotate teachers through the studios so all students experience many different teachers and one class is a combination class where they do contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, modern, and just a variety of styles with different instructors. They have at least 5 levels of core genres and several for the other as well. If you have a multi-genre dancer I highly recommend checking it out in person. My DD did not end up choosing it but it was in her final round of picks.

Thanks @grit2018 My daughter actually spent a few summers with CPYB, so is very familiar with Dickinson. It's a bit too remote for her, something about the lack of Starbucks.... teenagers!

I seem to remember that some of the schools will drop their applications and audition dates around August 1st, when the Common App opens.
