Colleges with Good Jazz Dance?

adance82adance82 2 replies1 postsRegistered User New Member
Hello all! I will be a senior this upcoming school year so I have been researching colleges at lot lately. I know that a lot of college BFA programs are heavily based on ballet and modern, but does anyone know of any that are more balanced with jazz and possibly tap as well? My top schools right now are Point Park and Pace Commercial Dance for this reason, and I would also like to stay on the east coast if possible. Broadway is the dream :) Thanks for any help!

The only school I know of (I’m sure there are more) where you can combine a dance BFA with a minor in musical theatre is UNC-Greensboro, BUT their dance program is definitely contemporary focused.

One program with strong programs both in jazz and musical theatre (separate programs) is Eastern Carolina University. The dance BFA can include tap.

University of AZ is triple track and their policy is that tap is to jazz as pointe is to ballet (important!); OKCU has great jazz and many from there end up in NY and the program does lots of Broadway/theatre style techniques (they also do ballet, jazz, & tap every semester), and also check out Dean College in Franklin MA which is modeled after U of AZ.

@NavigatingMom @threegirlpileup Okay good to know, thank you! I knew about Oklahoma City previously, and I think I ruled it out because of the distance, but I will definitely look into it again. Thanks for the help, I will look into all of these! I just want to be as versatile of a dancer I can, and I think that going to a college that only teaches ballet and modern won't really help me do that, and I think I love tap to much to give it up in college :)

Not really east coast, but SMU is also triple track, and they offer a minor in musical theater.

Point Park, Pace and OCU, definitely. Also, check out Boston Conservatory and University of the Arts. You may also wish to check WEBSTER Conservatory and Florida State.
