Thanks for the update! I haven't gotten the email yet though.
What does it mean if the essays are posted on Dec21 but we won't be notified until mid-Jan? Should we work on the essays then? What if we then find out that we're rejected in Jan?

    Dear Applicant,

Deep Springs has changed its notification dates for admission to the second round of our application process. For the class entering in 2013, applicants will be notified if they have been admitted to Part II of the applications process in mid-January. This is a change from the mid-December notification we have used in previous years, which is noted on the application form.

As you are probably aware, the College is waiting for a judicial ruling to ensure that we may include women in the 2013 entering class. The Judge intended to make his ruling by December 15, but he recently informed us that his schedule makes him unable to issue that ruling until early January. As a result, we will delay issuing our second-round invitations until we know more.

The due date for second round essays will also change; it will be at least two weeks after we inform applicants who have reached the second round of their status. For those curious about the second-round essay questions in the meantime, they will be posted on our website on December 21.

We greatly regret having to keep applicants waiting; we want you to know that we are grateful to both our male and female applicants for your interest in Deep Springs, and that we are doing everything we can to make coeducation at Deep Springs a reality for the class of 2013.

    Thank you,

    Bennet Bergman

    Chair, Applications Committee

    Deep Springs College

Thank you for sharing this email that i haven't got yet. I was wondering what happened to the DS admission on these days, but my inquiry is now solved.

Hmm, not sure how I feel about this whole delayed notification thing. Just got the email a few hours ago. Granted, I'm a terrible procrastinator...I wrote the first set of essays/entire application 2 days before it was due...but still. It seems awkward to release the essays on the 21st. I'm sure that many people will start early, but then some of those will still be rejected?....hmm.

Secondary thought that I had not realized about the coed debate. Maybe any of the girls could fill me in on this (since they have access to this magical coeducation that I keep hearing about). My understanding from their most recent updates/newsletter, etc. was that DS was going to proceed with coeducation regardless of the judge's final decision. As of the petition submitted by the two opposing trustees, I had understood that the judge's decision could at most block DS from using some of the funds from the original Nunn endowment; however, DS was planning on just making up the loss somehow...more funds on their own, etc...idk.

I was reading about the history of the school a while back. Doesn't DS HAVE to go coed by around 2017 or something like that anyway? I thought that stipulation of the loan from the Telluride Association to DS in the 90's was that although coeducation would be ignored for the time being and the facilities renovated, coeducation would have to be addressed by some set time period like 2017. Idk, can anyone correct me on this? Am I entirely ill-informed?

Could you post a link to where you found this?

    I still don't understand why i haven't received any mails from DS : S
Am i the only one who didn't get it? so worried : (

The skeptical part of this procrastination is that it doesn't make sense that DS's announcement is delaying because of the judicial ruling. In the letter, if i comprehended well, they are waiting until the judge rules for the coeducational system which will held on early January. And the letter says that the invitation letter to the second round will be given in mid- January. This indicates that DS had already made its decision and, now, is just waiting until the proper rule applies to the school.

But who they send letters to will depend on whether or not ladies make up a chunk of the round two folks.

To those who still haven't received the email yet,
I emailed DS and they said that its because the system they use to keep track of applicants' information is having problems, and they'll try to fix it as soon as possible and send out the rest of the emails. So it's a technical problem apparently. I was so scared that I thought they only sent it to the ones that's on their "potential" two lists, one for co-ed and one for all-males, as inferred by someone before.

I think at this point none of us can really do anything except to be patient and hope for the best. Enjoy the holidays everyone!

The judge today found that the Deep Springs Trust does not allow the admissionof women to Deep Springs College. Bound to be appealed, but that will take some time.

Any chance you could elaborate? Do you think coeducation is still a possibility for 2013?
  • ellejrellejr Registered User Posts: 9 New Member
But what about what they said about the Trust only applying to a portion of the money and not all of it? I thought there was some loophole there? And also didn't another institution donate on the condition that Deep Springs would go co-ed by X year?

Do you know, deepspringalum, if the judge actually issued an injunction against admitting women in 2013? I thought that was at least part of what was going to be ruled on. If not, it did sound like Deep Springs may still be able to admit women this year by not using the proceeds of the trust to fund the school, while the whole issue works its way through the legal system.
