Yeah! It would be interesting to see last years application to get an idea of what it'll be like. It will hopefully be released soon though. The court ruling setting back women being admitted is pretty gutting, though.

Here's a copy of an old 1st round app. It's on their servers still- I just googled for it and found it.

I'm also applying! I was interested to see that they asked to signify gender in the application. It seems a little presumptuous seeing as the hearing is in February. It would be a shame if they have to pull a fast one on their female applicants like they did last year. :/

I'm thinking of applying. It's kind of late to get started on the application, but better late than never, right? I had absolutely no time over the summer to do college stuff because of my job, but now things have settled down and I can get back to work. Luckily the whole women's debate doesn't affect me as I'm not of the female persuasion. I think it's interesting how few men's colleges there are compared to women's. I don't care either way though.

Application-wise, my main worry is that although I got high SAT/ACT scores, my GPA's only good, not great. I think it has to do with the fact that typical education makes me a bit bored. That's why I like the idea of Deep Springs. How's the application going for the rest of you?

Regarding the second essay -- write about a problem, theory, etc that has had a profound influence on your thought -- do you think they are looking for a research-type essay? I know it says "don't submit a research paper you did for class," but does that mean: write an original research paper for this application or don't submit a research paper?

^I think it can be theory or research driven. What they're looking for is someone who can have original thoughts and express them in a fluent manner. The topic was broad enough that someone could have written the essay on their favorite novel or on multivariable calculus. Honestly, if you feel good about your essay, it's fine.

I applied to Deep Springs via paper before they posted their online application on their website. I'm anxiously waiting to hear back from them in mid-December, and I certainly plan to visit Deep Springs if I make it to the next round. I did receive confirmation via email that my application was complete; however, I have not received ONE piece of mail from them.

I wrote my second application essay on meritocracy. What topics did everyone else write on? I'd love to learn more about the applicant pool.

Nobody's gotten anything yet. We'll find out by phone if we got the interview, and by mail if we didn't.

I wrote about life and death experiences shifting paradigms, centrism in US politics, and one satirical essay about how only awkward people go to Deep Springs. Overall, some weeeiiirrrddd essays.

Did anyone hear back yet from Deep Springs? I have not heard back from them, but I guess no news is good news. Maybe they'll start getting back to us later this week.

With essays like that being written maybe I'm out of my league... Did people spend tons of time on the 1st round? I only spent a couple hours writing (I was around the word limit too)
I haven't heard anything either. I hope I didn't put in the wrong phone #. That'd be tragic.

    I also haven't heard a decision yet.

@debergsteiger, I spent a long time working on the first round essays. I wrote more than twice as much that I scrapped and replaced than what I actually submitted.

No decision here yet. I can't imagine us not hearing back before Christmas.

I had the opposite problem. I spent a lot of time writing the essays, but they were well below the word limit. I felt that I said what I needed to say, so I just stopped. I guess we'll see how that panned out for me.

As long you effectively articulated the essence of your argument, then you should be fine. I'm hoping to hear back soon within the week!

"First round decisions will be released no later than December 22nd, 2013. If you do not receive a decision by that date, please contact the Applications Committee at apcom@deepsprings.edu."

So we'll know by Sunday. Best of luck to everyone.

I think maybe I'll find some religion this week so I can do some emergency prayers for this application.
