Denny DU Deer and Dears ...

Whistle PigWhistle Pig - Posts: 4,093 Senior Member
One of the anecdotal anomalies of Denison's suburban/small town/rural bordering of farmland location AND a heavily treed and brushy habitat campus is the attraction, presence, and magnitude of its deer population. Putting it mildly, whitetails are everywhere there! Walking down the sidewalk, grazing on the grasses, hiding behind the dorms ...heck I heard one especially assimilated young buck even audited a biology seminar on genetics.

In any case, yesterday 05 Nov, received an 0830 text from my DU coed daughter, noting a nice 6 point had just run behind Swasy Chapel, not 5 feet in front of her. Inquiring if she'd managed a shot, she said she was not allowed to carry her crossbow to class. Bummer.

And then, not 5 or 6 hours later, another text told me Slayter'd been closed down as a 10 pt. buck had apparently become enraged, seeing his own reflection in one of the plateglass windows, and thinking he had an equally 10 pointed competitor hanging @ the snackbar. Well, the dumb dear jumped right thru that glass, lacerating himself but good, and eventually getting himself shot by a local bowhunter who'd been called in by the police to extricate the perverted whitetail who was ripping up the Union and blooding all over the place. Quite a mess from what she said, but one Granville family is feasting on backstraps and venison steaks tonite.

Never a dull moment at dear ol' Denny DU.

btw, 11 Nov is determined to be the "peak" of the rut in Ohio. Let's hope it's not quite so disruptive or extreme among the student body ...

On the other hand, it might not be mere coincidence that the Student Govt is stumping for coed habitation opportunities. Bring in the bowhunters! Thin the herd! Close proximity results in Lyme disease ...or worse.
