Experiences with Russ College of Engineering

edited April 2013 in Ohio University
S3 is a hs junior and interested in Mechanical Engineering. Looking through CC threads, Ohio University has come to my attention. Does anyone here have experience with the engineering department? Any information you can share would be appreciated. Thanks!

S2 is a soph at Ohio U in the Russ College of Engineering.....however, he is a CS major so I can't specifically speak to the future engineers. I can say though, that S2 loves it in Athens. The Engineering curriculum is very tough, but he feels he is getting a tremendous education.

Collegeparents, thanks so much for your input. I was researching possible universities that might give merit to OOS students and this one popped up. S3 is looking for merit scholarships (or at least scholarships to bring OOS to IS prices) and a decent engineering school. If you have an opportunity to share more information about Ohio University and your son's experience with CS, I would be appreciative. It would give me an idea whether or not my son should apply in the Fall. (S2 is a CS major at another school - what a great major with alot of good opportunities!)

    Take a look at this:

The Gateway Award Program: Ohio University Admissions

The Gateway Award Program is very generous. The Gateway Excellence Scholarship is renewable for 4 years, valued at the full in-state tuition amount.....but OOS students are eligible for this as well (as far as I can tell). The Gateway Trustee Award is specifically for OOS students.....4 years renewable @ $6000/yr. The merit requirements do not seem too stiff to qualify for that award.

I've been very impressed with the Russ School of Engineering. Take a look on the OU website to view the curriculum for CS majors. Since the CS department resides in the School of Engineering, CS students are required to take some classes that may not be required of a typical CS major at another university. This may be a turn-off to some, but it was a plus in my son's eyes. He has done very well, and loves it at OU. He will be interning this summer at a software company in Cleveland. His mom and I will miss seeing him, but it is a great opportunity for a student just finishing his Soph year....plus he will be very well paid, so it was a no-brainer.

Your son will have to decide if OU is for him, but I'd (at the very least) look into it further. Good luck.....and let me know if there is anything else I could help you with.

^^^^Thank so much for your input. We are WI residents and one of the reasons I was looking at OU is because of the Gateway scholarship. OOS schools are so expensive and this is another option for S3. S2 is a CS freshman at Univ. of Alabama, and he also had to take a few engineering courses this year (which I consider a plus too.) I am impressed that your son has a summer internship....I am/was hoping S2 could find one too but this summer I want him to come home so unless an amazing opportunity comes up, he will be lucky just to find a part-time job.

I am so glad your son loves OH. I am definitely interested in researching it a little more for my son and will encourage him to apply. Hopefully this summer we can head out that way to check it out. Thanks again for your help!

You're welcome! I don't know what part of WI you live in, but I think you will love the OU campus in Athens. It's beautiful.......as is that area of SE Ohio. Very hilly terrain in a rural area.....

Compared to UA, Ohio U will feel smaller, less intense football culture, much less fraternity scene, plenty of housing. OU seems safe, friendly, and easy to manage.

snugapug, actually you are describing an atmosphere that S3 may excell in. I will definitely encourage him to apply next year!

We are considering OU or Marquette, still don't know which one is best suited for S1 and only. So far OU is on the lead with the best FA but we don't have any clue about how the engineering program compares to Maquette's

Otoledo, you might want to start your own thread in this forum and the Marquette forum. You might get better responses. I'm sorry I can't help you. It wasn't financially feasible to go to OU so we didn't visit it at all. I'm from Wisconsin and Marquette does have a very good engineering reputation.
