Getting ready for my D to do this crazy application/audition ride next year! Reading everyone's posts have been a Godsend! I would love any advice on where to purchase sheet music and plays!

Where do you live? (I urge everyone to update your CC profile to say what part of the country you are in. It's often helpful!)

If you live in the Washington DC area I would tell you to go to the American Backstage Company, where they have thousands of plays and books about theater. A few other cities have theatrical bookstores. Otherwise, visit the library and bookstores and shop online when you don't need to flip through the book before you commit.

Same for sheet music (for musicals, I presume?). We like to buy the songbooks for entire shows, and if you don't have a theatrical bookstore nearby, you can shop around online for those, or try your local music store. There are also websites with downloadable sheet music. Google is your friend.

I'm a fan of used bookstores and book sales and thrift stores. Years ago I developed the habit of buying plays and play anthologies and theatrical music and theater CDs whenever I come across them. As a result, my son has a lot to choose from, right here in our living room.

I live in Raleigh, NC. We have a few anthologies and my daughter usually just buys individual songs she needs online. However, I saw a video interview from one college that discouraged the online sheet music. Are there any copyright rules for photo copying any of the sheet music from books for auditions? I know I'm probably over thinking all of this, just want to make sure she has all of her ducks in a row when the time comes!

MTRaleighmom, did the school say why they discouraged online sheet music? When we get music from musicnotes online, the paperwork reads something like "for use by <name>".

I was watching the audition day video on the BW website and they discouraged music notes.com saying its better and easier to read music from the original score. Not sure if he was referring to the quality of the way it prints out or if it has missing musical elements from the original score.

Interesting... Now I'll have to look at the websites of the schools she's yet to audition. I don't recall seeing that and not on BW's website either. Thanks for posting that.

I was concerned about copyright issues for photocopied music myself. After some research I concluded that a photocopy of sheet music that you own, made into an "audition cut" for college auditioning purposes, falls under the "fair use" provisions of the law.

Thanks prodeese...I agree! Just starting to get caught up in the details! GSOMTMom...there is a new video on the audition page of the BW website. I've seen their other videos on YouTube, but this is a new one for this audition season.
