Advice for getting a summer Internship

Well, now that I have this summer figured out, I'm looking ahead to next summer. Does anyone have any advice on getting a summer internship/ research position? As in when I should apply? And also, how competitive are programs typically? How many is a safe number to apply to?

Also, if you know anything about internships abroad, that would be really helpful.
