Hi everyone,

I noticed that people in my school were being nominated for GSS and wanted to give you some of my wisdom.

I went to GSS last summer and it was such a great time, from the students to the professors.

If you have any questions with applications/the program/classes feel free to ask!

Wow, this is really nice of you! If you don't mind, what do you think the admission people are looking for in the scientific discovery essay (and what did you write about)? Should it be more like a report or like a personal opinion essay? Thank you so much!

No problem at all! For the scientific discovery essay I wrote about Linus Pauling's alpha helix model and how it spurred later projects like the DNA double helix, sickle cell disease, and the Human Genome Project.

I interpreted it as an opportunity to flex my science muscles so I wrote it more like a report.

For the first essay about scientific interests should I write it in terms of a narrative? Thank you.

A narrative sounds like a great idea if it can show your personal experience/interest in science!

Hello, is this post active? I just wanted to know my competition! Who probably outclasses me by miles, ha. If my extracurriculars aren't strictly related to science, how much does that hurt me?

My son went to the Governor's School of Engineering and Technology last year. (GSET). I don't see a thread for that this year. Anyway, for the question about ECs that do not pertain to the sciences, I don't think that is a negative. At GSET, many kids had ECs unrelated to engineering and technology. These included, crew, marching band, karate, violin, performing magic, dance, origami, etc. The program even had a talent day and also days when kids taught other kids "life skills" such as card tricks and origami. So, I think GSS just wants to honestly hear about you and what you enjoy. Good luck!

I haven't received mine yet and it's really worrying me; I don't know if my guidance counselor sent everything in on time.

Actually, I just got mine today, meaning they're still sending them out if you haven't gotten yours yet.

I was accepted as well! The emails are individualized, so I think we might be getting them at different times.

Has anyone gotten email confirmation after sending in their commitment forms? They said "We will send you an email when we receive the forms." I sent mine in on the 7th and NJ mail only really takes a day or two to send but I haven't gotten a response. Only asking bc I havent ever really mailed anything and not sure if I **** it up.

Omg thank you so much nihilists. You put my mind at ease. I have the same problem and have been contemplating if i messed up some where. I actually called them and had no answer and assumed there was no one working that day. Thankfully now that i know im not alone I can feel more at ease.
