Rice University RD Class of 2020 Discussion **OFFICIAL THREAD**

basedchembasedchem 1608 replies73 threads Senior Member
Hello hopeful Owls! I decided to create a discussion thread for Rice RD applicants. The results thread (when all the stats are posted) will come later. Where is everyone applying from? I'm applying from CA with a fee waiver.

Does anyone know how they decided who to send the fee waivers to? I got one, but I am not sure why.

Some of the fee waivers were sent to students who did well on the SAT subject tests.

@SnapApp People who did well on subject tests (my average when I got mine was 770) get fee waivers because of CB's student search thingy.

Just wondering, do you guys think a 2240 superscore (690CR/800M/750W/11E) a 33 ACT (35E/35M/28R/32S/31W) (I suck at reading comp lmao) an 800 Chem, 770 Math 2(oops), 3 5's AP tests, and a 4 on a self study is ok enough for Rice? I'm an OOS kid, and not too many people from my school apply (when compared to like Stanford or UCB or smth).

@SnapApp I'm Asian, household income is pretty high even for number of dependents.

Uh the ones I put on the common app:
Prolific winner in all levels of Science Olympiad Competition, VP of Events and a Team Captain for this year.
Chemistry Club Activity Manager and Tutor
Volunteering at the library, with the school, and at a specialized sports camp
    JV Tennis, XC, and Track
DECA state competitor and regional winner
    Additional one:
Top 2 in school for Chemistry Olympiad

Intended Major is Chem, my CA essay is apparently "well-written, personal, and touching", have two glowing recs from AP Chem and a lit teacher.

Kicker: GPA is 3.75 UW/4.1 W (unofficial). Had bad personal problems in sophomore year that were addressed in Counselor recs, one teacher rec, and in additional info.

Hi! I'm hoping to get some advice. I took the SAT and got a 2000 (730-math, 630-cr, 650-writing), and I wasn't very happy with it. I know I can get a 800 in math and higher in CR, but I won't be able to take he current SAT again due to All-State band. So, my question is would it look better to have a 2160 vs. a 2000 or to be a All-State band member and be more involved with extracurriculars/volunteer? Also my gpa is 4.0UW and I am a Texas resident.

Applying RD too! Will admit, main reason I'm applying is just b/c of the fee waiver and my parents already sent my ACT & SATII scores, but I hear the quality of life is just absolutely amazing over there

How much do you guys think the fee waiver predicts admission? I feel like it's just a way to get more people to apply but later deny them to bring down there acceptance rate, sorta like with UChicago's mass advertisement

@zeppelin that's exactly what it is. Do you think they record who they send fee waivers to?

    @Zeppelin7 It's mostly a marketing ploy.

Ah that's what I was worried about. Oh well, hopefully I have a decent shot.

I would think they atleast record who they send the fee waivers to so not everyone can just claim they got one and not have to pay anything

@Zeppelin7 Well yes, but it has 0 effect on your admission.

Yeah, I think Rice, like a lot of other schools, is just trying to deflate their admit rate :P
