All Good Things Must Come to an End - Burrito Brothers Closing

For 40 years, locals, students and burrito fiends knew exactly where to find the most popular burrito in Gainesville.

A wooden door beside a brick church building led hungry customers to an alley that opened up to a patio. Sometimes, long sprawling lines gave away the restaurant's inconspicuous location.

Burrito Brothers Taco Co., the iconic Gainesville eatery born out of a literal hole in the wall, will close its doors Saturday, the restaurant announced Monday on Facebook.

Burrito Brothers joins a growing list of shuttered Gainesville institutions: Joe's Deli, Purple Porpoise, Orange & Brew, and as of Saturday, 101 Cantina. Leonardo's Pizza is expected to close this Summer.

Truly sad. I still remember the long lines whenever they had Guac....all those great, "hole in the wall" places, near campus are being replaced by corporate places on campus...

Not an alum, but driving around with my son this weekend was kind of depressing. That monstrosity at the NW corner of 13th and Univ should have never been approved. And changes to all those small Univ ave businesses East of 13th will make it alot more generic I feel.

Burrito Bros. sells out, has second busiest day
It ran out of food by 7 p.m.

For the second consecutive night, Burrito Brothers Taco Co. ran out of food Tuesday, its second busiest day in 40 years.

At 7 p.m., a cashier at the 1402 W. University Ave. restaurant informed a snaking line of hungry people they were tapped out of food.
For about four hours, there was a constant line of about 40 people at the restaurant, hoping to eat at the Gainesville mainstay one last time before it closes for good Saturday. UF alumni have traveled from around the nation to get one more taste, Akerson said.
Despite a $10,000 donation pledged Tuesday via GoFundMe, Akerson said the restaurant won’t be accepting any money intended to save it. With a reported loss of about $300,000 in revenues since September 2015, Burrito Bros. is well past the point of saving, he said.

"We’ll go until we can’t go any- more,” Akerson said, “and then we’ll cry and drink beer.”
