We have TSA pre-check/Global entry. Not sure how this will pan out.
Those scanners catch weird things. We always travel with a bit of calcium/magnesium powder in our hand luggage. If this is in a baggie there's no problem. If it's in a plastic bottle we get stopped. The scanner can't determine if it's liquid of powder when it's in such a container.
The pros of bringing my Kindle instead of heavy books... I think it's thin enough it won't be mistaken for something dire. No exploding battery either.
DH got alot of TSA attention when we was traveling with a copy of "Guns, Germs, and Steel". The most dangerous thing about that book was probably its size - very thick and heavy. You'd think someone smart enough to read Jared Diamond for fun would be smart enough to travel with it as an ebook.
