Columbia Interview

Has anyone received any info on an interview/ had an alumnus contact them for scheduling? At this point, if you haven't received anything, are you not in the interview pool?
Thanks (:

I've received information regarding interview. But I think they send out interview requests on a rolling basis, so you could get a message at any time between now until March.
In addition, an interview is not "accept"... and there are students who get in without having an interview.

Out of curiosity are you a domestic or Intl. applicant?

@arc2018 I have conducted interviews for Columbia for several years. Every applicant is part of the interview pool. From my experience, whether you receive an interview is largely a function of where you live and whether there are enough alumni in your area to conduct the interviews. I just saw a statistic that in Los Angeles, something like 16% of applicants were interviewed last year. (By the way, I was admitted to Columbia without an interview.)

My daughter was contacted recently to schedule a video conference interview. We live in an area where it seems there are not many alumni interviewers available. I was a little surprised to learn that the interviewer is not an alum, but is a current student (underclassman in the same major). How common is this?

Is it normal for one applicant to get interview invitation, but the other applicant from the same school didn't?

@binky66 Yes it is normal that one student gets an interview while another from same school doesn't get one. It truly is random and depends on availability of alumni in the area.

@Shimainu I don't know how normal it is for Columbia, but USC uses students to interview applicants. If it helps get more applicants interviewed, then I wouldn't mind being interviewed by a student.

DS just got an email for interview -- Los Angeles area. I don't think it will matter, but of course he's doing it. This doesn't mean I think he's getting accepted or rejected. Just that I don't think it matters.

In some areas there are few alumni available to interview. Don't worry about it. if you get an interview -- great. If not, it will not hurt you. Best of luck. Go Lions!

I've interviewed for Columbia for several years, and the number of interviewers just can't keep pace with the ever-growing number of applicants. Remember that ED and RD applicants may get an interview.

A word of advice, don't stress out about the interview. They really don't matter. If you get one, great. If not, it won't affect your chances. I had a 20 minute phone interview with a Columbia student and I was surrounded by a bunch of other people so I really didn't feel like I could be real in the interview. I still got in. Now, I conduct those same phone interviews and I can assure you, the interviewers are extremely charitable with their impressions of applicants in the interviews. We have to find a reason to like you and in almost every case, we find that reason.

Nothing here, in Missouri. Had the Harvard interview. I understand it depends if there are any alumni in the area willing to interview

I still feel that the Columbia Interview in China is quite selective, because they only interview a small number of students in China, but most admitted student during recent years are interviewed.

Received an email about an interview “event” in my area a couple of weeks ago so I replied and heard nothing, sent a follow up email and heard nothing. Probably not the greatest sign

@ambkeegan You might get a phone interview from a current student since there might not be too many alumni in Missouri. I applied from Kansas and got a phone interview when I applied. If you don’t get one, don’t sweat it.

Where do you live? What did they ask you during the interview? Also do you have any tips or advice to write a good essay? Thankyou
