Chance me for University of Michigan ann arbor school of engineering - 2023

NatF19NatF19 9 replies1 threads New Member
Hello there, tnx for taking the time to read this, would anyone please chance me for U of Michigan 2023 school of engineering.
Since I was a kid anything related to engineering and STEM fields was my biggest interest and after tons of researching, I have found Umich to be a great school for me. I have it as my top choice school and am considering to apply for Early Decision. I immigrated to the United States as an asylum seeker 2 months before starting my Freshman year of high school and I live with my father who I came with as an asylum seeker too. So you can say I am a 0th generation immigrant. Both my parents went to college but not in the United States. My Mother had a bachelors degree in Economics from Ethiopia and she still lives there and My father has a Master's degree in finances from Sweden. I don't know whether that makes me a 1st generation college student or not so yea none of my family attended a university in the United States. I love in Maryland meaning I am going to be applying as an out of state student. I still am stuck in my asylum application and still in the process of getting a green care making me a pre permanent resident and I also don't know if that'll make me an international student. Before coming to the States I was born and raised in Ethiopia until I was 14 years old.

Here are my stats:

no class rank :(
3.52 unweighted
4.11 weighted
1210 SAT but I'm working towards 1380-1400 this August
570 World history SAT II and am also working towards taking SAT II for Math2 and Physics in October
AP Hum Geo (4) AP world hist (3) APCS (1) not sending that in
Signed up for AP CALC AB, AP CHEM, AP physics C DP, and AP literature

Extracurriculars, leadership, and awards

Cabinet officer for MATH honors society at my school
Former secret service for Liberty's promise immigrant youth program
NHS and NSHSS member
Stage crew tech team
Varsity Track and Field and got the Blazer Spirit award for it
I did a lot of community service (200+ hours) current IT department volunteer at a Land trust company
I have been recognized and received the WEB Dubois award of academic achievement for 3 straight years
Honor roll student for 3 years

I am planning on visiting the school in a couple of days and also visiting the Engineering program and also I'm planning on majoring in Aerospace Engineering concentration in Astronautics
African American/ Black male. The family earns 55k per year only me my father in the household and the rest of my family (mom and 2 younger brothers are still back home in Ethiopia)

Appreciate anyone who reads this and a feedback would be sweet too :)

ok here's more info I forgot to mention
I am a former ESOL student (English for non-native speakers) and most of my classes were honors and the 3 AP's I mentioned above. I will be enrolling dual enrollment in the upcoming fall in my senior year. I am a POSSEE scholarship nominee, still, in the middle of competing for the scholarship, My human geography teacher extremely liked me in her class as I was putting a lot of effort in it and I've already asked her for a letter of recommendation, same for my former honors chemistry teacher /future AP chem teacher.I also planning on taking the ACT in September expecting between a 27 to 31 idk

and I also have exceeded my high school required credits to graduate by taking a summer class for extra credit and also taking an extra class in my junior year, only magnet students are required to do that but my counselor enabled me to take more.

I will be honest, not looking too good for you from GPA and SAT, especially out of state.

Being black does help, but might not be enough.

I am also applying to Michigan this fall and my stats look a bit better. If they accept you over me I might be in a rage.

Either way, good luck to you sir. And have a few back up colleges in mind.

    thx for the feedback
I sure do have plenty of colleges in back up like my in-state school UMD which is also a pretty good aerospace school and also ASU, Texas A n M and others

Michigan only looks at unweighted scores A=4,B=3 and so on. Plus and minus don't count.

Out-of state is very rough. 10,000 people on the wait list this year. 3.8 avg but for engineering it is like 3.93 with 33/34 ACT. There is also only Early Action not Ed Early decision.

@Kadel1023 you should stop comparing yourself on many threads and saying if they get in and you don't you will get mad. It's not proper on this forum and once this site heats up soon it won't be appreciated by students applying and asking suggestions. With 10,000 people on the wait list with better and worse stats then yours.. No one is safe. Having better stats doesn't guarantee anyone anything especially in a holistic review approach.

@NatF19 Don’t listen to @Kadel1023. He is commenting on a lot of posts negative stuff in relation to his admission aspects. College app season makes everyone get pretty competitive. Try to stay positive! (:

As for your chances, it helps to be an URM, however the average stats for out of staters is around a 3.8 GPA UW. You have a unique background that might help as well, colleges look for diversity in building their class.

At this point it looks like Umich is a reach for you, as it is for most students. Try not to get too caught up in the dream school thing. Umich is my top school too, but I’m thinking about it as a lukewarm idea, that way I won’t be too disappointed if I don’t get in.

I would look at large out of state publics with good engineering schools, which will be comparable to Umich atmosphere.

As far as your status. I would call admissions and just ask. If both your parents have college degrees then to me your not the first in your family to go to college. When you fill out your application it will ask about your parents education and degrees. This is one way the schools find out this information.

oh its fine by me, I can understand on why other students tend to be competitive this time of year.
I think you're right about how I should look into other schools like I have UMD which is my homeschool and even Texas tech and Utexas Austin so I have a good amount of secured schools there, that have pretty good aerospace programs. It's just that this university has attracted me since I met one of their representatives, It still would be fine if I don't get accepted there cuz as you said too 'stay positive' right. I'll just focus on preparing the best application I possibly can. another thing would be if I attend there it would be attending a school with a lot of smart and talented people which I have to compete to stand out in research programs, competitions and even career recruitment and so on other things
Anyways I already wrote too much but tnx

If your school uses Naviance look up what others students had Stat wise to get accepted. You can use both for any school your looking at also

I apologize for my tone if you find it negative or sarcastic.

I always try to paint a realistic picture of what I have gathered in the admissions process, and share my take. High school students dont have sugar coating skills yet.

I will tone down on the honesty and have a more supportive tone.

With that said, I do feel lady luck is not on yourside with Michigan, at least not high.

I do wish you good luck, and no matter where you go, good education awaits.

I understand, it happens and no one is perfect. Not gonna lie, you're right about my chances being low looking at my stats. Tnx for the extra feedback though, appreciate it a lot. I don't really expect to be admitted right away, best chances would be a waitlist I would say based on the info I've gathered. But one way or another I still have more options for great schools I can attend even if they're not one of the elite. Tnx again and good luck on your application too.

@Knowsstuff So I just looked up the stats of how many were accepted to UMich from my school on Naviance. 12 out of 44 students were accepted in 2016 ,10 out of 5 wee accepted in 2017, but oh boy only 3 of 52 were accepted in 2018. I can already see the rising competition. But the scattergram data graph which was recorded f 10 yrs shows students from different areas of stats were admitted. I'll just hope for the best now. Tnx for the tip tho!

If this is your school of choice and you don't get in right away, then you can always attend one of the community colleges first. I decided to attend community college to save on expenses and get many pre-reqs outta the way.
As a transfer student, I got into Umich with only a 3.75 GPA. I didn't have any special activities to include, but I did work full time and the school knows this.

I know many people that didn't bother applying because they thought that they'd be rejected, but the school really does look at your whole character. I knew someone with a 3.9 GPA that was rejected! Good essays, good activities, and good upwards movement in performance always helps!

I assume it's just one of many choices, but it's always good to keep a few doors open. :)

Hi, I don't mean to come off as confrontational here, but stats don't mean everything for Umich.

I was accepted with a 3.75 GPA over a student with a 3.9 GPA. It's hard to chance people because there's so many factors that play into the review process; therefore, it's unrealistic to assume you'll have a better chance than someone with lower stats.

I'm not entirely certain whether this is actually true or not, but another student/friend told me that the school considers anyone with a GPA above 3.3.

It's better to work hard on the essays (even STUDY for the essays. I spent a month writing TWO essays for Umich) and present yourself as a person moreso than an above-average statistic.

@LydiaEllie Congrats, I dream of being a wolverine. We all wish we could do the same.

With that said, here are the stats

It is even more selective for COE and Ross.

If you don't get in, I think you will be a stronger candidate with your pre-reqs out of the way at a good community college, and good grades there.

Also, be sure to take the courses in the requirements for transfer: https://www.engin.umich.edu/admissions/undergrad/transfer-students/admissions/

True true, considering that I have more options on the table including good chances at other pretty good colleges I sure shouldn't be worried even if I don't get in,
But I still would want to do my best on them essays even if I don't get in right away or so @LydiaEllie
