Which NE boarding to apply for 10th grade

MuscatwineMuscatwine 3 replies2 threads New Member
Hi everyone,
My daughter is looking at boarding schools in the NE for 10th grade. Aside from Andover and Exeter, which schools accept a large number of 10th graders too?

I don't have numbers but I assume the following:

Choate
Hotchkiss
Lawrenceville

Thanks!

I would definitely look at St. Paul's. They take a lot of 10th graders in proportion to the size of the class. I just looked at the numbers and this year there are 102 9th graders and 147 10th graders. My son entered as a 4th former (10th grade) and the transition was pretty easy, in part because there were so many other students entering in the 10th grade

I think most NE schools accept 10th grade applications because Junior Boarding Schools run through 9th grade.

George School (20 minutes from Lawrenceville-- neither in NE) has traditionally taken quite a few 10th graders. I seem to recall that the freshman dorms were smaller, so 10th has room for new students.

Peddie (about 30 minutes from Lawrenceville though in a different direction than George!) also takes 10th graders.

Berkshire adds sophomores, too, if I recall correctly.

Yes, @CaliMex is correct. I recall our tour guide at Berkshire talking about them keeping the 9th grade class relatively small and taking a large number of kids for 10th.

We personally know 2 kids at Taft, one at SGS, 2 at DA and one at Choate who entered as 10th graders....also a fair number of repeating or hold-back students at NE Boarding schools for sports. Many schools add to their numbers in 10th grade. Just look at the class/grade size stats.

PLEASE CONSIDER TAFT!!!! This year there were about 50 new sophomores, and they get along very well with other new sophomores and returners alike. Taft is a great school, I'm in the class of 2023 and it's great. I love everyone in my grade.

SMS accepts a good number of 10th graders for a small school.

Choate accepted a BUNCH of new sophomores this year. I'm not sure the exact number, but it's probably around 40+

Yes @CavsFan2003 - we know 5 students that came into Choate as Sophomores this year! They seem to grow their class - so people should apply.

FWIW — one kid from prior local day school got accepted to Choate - then 4 other kids we know from the NY/CT/MA area through various club sports- girls and boys - got accepted to Choate. Also, we know a boy who started at L’Ville as a Sophomore. Two kids at Berkshire who started as Sophomore & Junior. Also a boy who went to Salisbury and a girl who went to SGS as Sophomore.
