How to ask for More Merit Aid at Rose Hulman

RLGoldRLGold 2 replies1 threads New Member
Daughter with EA to Rose Hulman and Purdue School of Computer Science. Prefers Rose. Received $22,000 Merit Aid. Anyone have any tips on how to go about asking for more $ from Rose. She is also a top recruit for one of their sports teams. Her Coach says to do a face to face with Fin. Aid Director in March. Has anyone had any success getting more $ from Rose than was originally offered? Thank you.

is this school your child’s first choice?
do you know how much more you need to make the school affordable? how much?

    what is your eFC?

Is RH a Div III school? would giving more aid violate any NCAA rules and smack of a “hidden athletic award”? @twoinanddone how does this all work?

has her coach spoken to FA?

Merit comes from admissions usually, not FA office.

RH is a division 3 school and as such does not give athletic scholarships. That being said...perhaps the school could sweeten the pot to attract this student.

Call admissions and ask. Admissions typically handles merit aid.

Because she's an athlete, the coach can make sure she gets every cent she's earned but not one cent more. The coach/FA may know of other sources of aid they can get her (that all other students are eligible for if they meet the requirements). At my daughter's school (also a tech school) there were bonuses for eagle scout/girl scout gold awards, robotics, STEM high schools. At Embry-Riddle there are scholarships for women in engineering. There were some local scholarships the schools knew about. Since those are all open to non-athletes, those are all fine.

She can't get extra funds because she's an athlete and the schools have to report the numbers, so they are very careful about making sure all the athletes' awards are in line with other students with similar stats. If she gets work study the athletic department can make life pretty easy with an easy job that works around her schedule.
