I hope a current student can help with my question. I understand that there is a foreign language placement test at Elon. How hard is it to place out of a language?

My daughter took Spanish in middle and high school, though not AP. She placed out of a language and into Junior level.

Same here. She tested out of the requirement for foreign language. I don't think she was the best at her language so my guess is it is very possible. I did have her do two review sessions with a tutor/friend to brush up before she tested which was at Orientation in the fall.

Thanks for the replys. DS has taken french 6-11 and hated it. He threw out all of his notebooks at the end of his junior year. I will probably have him tutored before this test. My daughter AP'd out of the requirement at U Richmond so maybe she will be able to help brush up over the summer.

^^TM: any ideas of what to focus on with the tutors? D is excellent at conversation and vocab but can't do well on verb formations for her life........

I would be more than willing to hire a tutor for a couple of hours to have her place out.......

    what is the test like?

There is some discussion on the Elon website (Pendulum) about changing the FL requirement to increase proficiency (yuch) but it looks like that wouldn't be in effect until Fall 2013; I'm assuming that it wouldn't apply to enrolled students.....

Does Latin count? S2 stopped taking Spanish in 10th grade as he hated it. Is taking Latin this year and next. I did not see Latin listed as a major on the website - does anyone know if testing out of language with Latin is an option? I shudder to think he'll have to return to Spanish!

RVM: no idea...in fact, I don't even know how they are handling the placement test this year; no mention was made about it during orientation......I'm sure there is contact information on the FL website if you wanna call/email and ask.....

and, like your son, my D will NOT be taking Spanish under any circumstances in college; will prob start Hebrew......

I will get details and get back to you. It was online, short and she didn't think she did well enough but that is all I remember her telling me.

Rodney, wasn't exactly sure but did remember it was vocab and grammar. Sorry I could not be specific. We had the tutor go over vocab and mostly grammar. She took Spanish all through High School but the instuction level was awful. She did that just so she could at least keep up with whatever elementary skills she learned. Luckily it was enough at Elon. Sorry to be so vague.

Looks like my D would not be able to place out of Hebrew, since there's no test. I guess she'll have to take the Spanish exam.

Thank you Rodney for the link. I had read that but did not know how tough the test was. My DD received all kinds of national awards in French but only got a 3 on the AP exam. One never knows how to study for the particular test. I'm guessing that the Elon test is not as hard as the AP one.
TM - thanks for the vocab and grammar hints. I know the test is evolving but that general iformation is very helpful.

TM - My daughter did test out at U Richmond. My son is the one looking at Elon. He has less of a fondness for foreign language. All the more reason to try and get him tutored so he can test out.
Thanks everyone I hope this helped a lot of CC folks.

S did had not taken Spanish for 2 years and did not do well enough to test out during orientation. He did take the course during Winter Term (extensive, every day) and is now finished!
