Endowed Scholarship Question

MTChicago4MTChicago4 15 replies5 threads New Member
edited April 2011 in Elon University
Did anyone who applied for Elon's Endowed Scholarship receive an update on the scholarship? The email indicated: "...the Scholarship Committee has just completed their first level of review. Results from the first round of consideration are currently available on OnTrack." However, when you go to the OnTrack website, it only indicates the application is complete.

We emailed the Admissions office to clarify what should be available on the site regarding the first round results and they just said final decisions would be made available in April.

I got the same email, but when I went to Ontrack I saw that my application had been advanced to the next level. It continued, saying "...this does not guarantee you will be awarded a scholarship, your application reflects well on you, your family, and your school. Final scholarship decisions will be made in early April."

I got that email/notification a while ago and still haven't heard anything. A lot of the people who I talk to who also got that email said they've already had telephone interviews...should I be nervous? We find out soon...I'm a little freaked out that I haven't had an interview.

I was too selected as an alternate. Do you know when we will get our financial aid packages?

I'm also an alternate...does anyone know how many alternates there are all together? And how is it determined which one would get the scholarship should someone decide not to go to Elon?

And I believe we find out our FA packages April 5th.

Does anyone know how they go about choosing the alternates (if someone forgoes their scholarship)? Is it a random selection? Do the alternates have numbers or scores? How is this done? Anyone have a clue?

I found out this afternoon that Cindy Barr is the contact person at Elon that can answer these questions. I've emailed her. Hopefully she will respond soon. In case anyone else would like to shoot her an email her email address is [email protected].

Sent the email with the questions about the alternate list for the Endowed Scholarship and this is part of the response I received..."At this point, the alternate list for Endowed Scholarships is not ranked. Because different scholarships have different gender and geographic criteria for the awards, we wait to rank students until an award becomes available. For example, it would do you absolutely no good to be the first alternate if a space for the Watson Scholarship opens up because that award is restricted to NC Residents. You are an alternate for two of our awards: the Georgeo Scholarship ($7500/year) and the Susan Scholarship ($12000/year). The number of alternates awarded each year varies. Some years, I am able to award 10+ to alternate students, sometimes only a couple.

I will be honest, the current alternate pool is deep but it has to be. We started out with approximately 220 alternates on Friday. I just checked my list at lunch today and we are down to 180. The reality is students will continue to drop off quickly as we approach the May 1 deadline. By the end of April, I am usually lucky to have 20-30 students left in the alternate pool. In my experience, alternate students who are willing to stay with us until that May 1 deadline generally have the best odds of receiving one of the awards. That said, I also understand how hard it is to wait to make your college decision, especially when your friends are talking about where they are going in the fall and have everything settled. We did not phone interview every alternate student, so that means that you are certainly in the priority pool we will consider if and when the opportunity arises."

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply!! That helped a lot! Did she happen to mention when/if alternates will be notified that they are no longer in the running?

I heard from a current student that is it very unlikely to receive a scholarship as an alternate this late in the game, and even more unlikely this year due to strong applicant pool. :( But good luck to anyone who decides to wait it out!
