Questions about Elon

I visited the campus last week and was immediately convinced to apply. The concerns I have are not aesthetic though, but inside the classroom and in social life. I am not the most social person, so I am hoping to mesh with people in my interest group. I am very hard-working and enjoy being around smart people, but I am worried that the student body will be very narrow-minded and snobby. I know that the school does not provide a lot of financial aid, and thus it appeals to a more upper class group. But my major concern is the academics. I like to be around people who are ambitious and I do not want to go to a college where people just want to smoke and drink all night and come to class hungover until they can party again that night. I'm fine with a little fun on the weekends, but I also want an atmosphere where there is interesting conversation and learning, not just highschool v2.

Sorry if this came off at all badly, I just want to know what Elon is like :)

I also really want an honest answer because I can only go to college once and I want to make the right choice. Some schools aren't the right fit for me and if that is the case with Elon, so be it, but I want an honest answer.

Thank you,

My S is applying so my answer is only based on observation. When we were on campus the students we ran in to were extremely nice and helpful.

As for academics, all you need to look at is all the accolades and great rankings Elon is receiving. All schools have received the highest accreditation in the country and that is shared with I believe only 6 others.

Students are engaged in their learning at Elon. They just don't say it, we observed it. They lunch with faculty, text them if they have questions, participate in internships and are encouraged to participate in a global community initiative.

There are learning communities where students with similar interests live together. Go on the website and see if there is a community that you feel would be a good match. Of course there are the many educational clubs too.

I suggest you do more exploring of all Elon has to offer. Read E-net to see all the activities on campus.

If you are accepted, go to an acceptance weekend and stay over at the college so you see and feel first hand what goes on on campus.

Obviously we are hooked. We feel that Elon is a special place for S and hope he is accepted.

I am sure current parents will chime in here soon on what a great school Elon is, but it all comes down to what is the best fit for you.

    Good luck

You sound like DD, who is happy at Elon. Not everyone seems to be intellectually curious, but there are plenty. You will not feel out of place, and like most colleges, if not moreso, there will be resources available to take you as far as you want to go on your academic journey.
