2007 Applicants to Elon

edited November 2007 in Elon University
I was curious as to who else on the board is applying to Elon as freshmen for Fall 2008.

Also, for those who have gone through with the application by now, did anyone use the "topic of his/her choice" prompt for the essay? If so, did you "recycle" an essay from a different college application? I really want to, but I am worried that I would violate the instructions of submitting an "original essay" if I did so.

Thanks.

For the essay, I used an essay I wrote for my English class for college applications, so it's fine.

scuba723--my son applied to Elon for Fall 2008. He used the same essay for all his apps which was a topic of his choice. For some schools he had to write addtional essays on the supplemental apps.

My daughter is applying - early action. I have no idea what she wrote for her essay - I am not privy ;).

The term "original essay" just means that it is an original piece of work by you. As long as you wrote it - you are good.

Anyone going to the open house on Nov 17th?

We've have been to an Info Session and Tour last spring. Hopefully we will be making another visit when (fingers crossed!) he gets accepted. We are from the Northeast so any visiting requires planning and $$$$. Good Luck to all especially the OOS like my S. :)

I would like to thank everybody that offered me suggestions on my question pertaining to the essay. I checked with the Admissions department to play it safe, and they said "recycling" the essay was fine.

I already hit the button for the Early Admissions Fall 2008, and will be getting my materials together for the Honors Fellows program soon.

    Good luck to all.

I thought there were only 3 questions you could answer for the essay and I didn't see any that were the topic of your choice...???

    On the application it states:
"Please submit an original essay of at least 250 words on a topic of your choice or on one of the topics below."

Hi Momsworried..saw your post and was interested because I am from MA. My daughter is presently a HS junior may be considering Elon, and I wondered what made it catch your son's eye. I think it may be a reach school for her, but we'll see... I thought we would take a trip in the spring to visit the campus and go from there. She is undecided at this point, as her interests in majors are too varied to get a clear picture. Elon has lots of opportunities and major, plus internships and study abroad, all which caught her attention (not to mention a warmer climate.) She is also thinking about Cali schools, but the ones that are medium to small tend to be private and are very expensive, so they may not be an option.

Good luck to all the seniors putting together the applications!

    buggie,
as for the expensive price of the smallish california schools, don't rule them out just because of the price. it is common to get more financial aid from more expensive schools. for instance, i was accepted and offered a fairly large package (mostly scholarships) at hobart in upstate new york. elon, on the other hand, offered me very little financially (federal loan and work study) the bottom line ended up being within a couple thousand dollars, despite hobart's list price being 40+ including room and board

Buggie44- My son liked Elon because it feel like a New England school but with the great climate of North Carolina. It has become very popular in recent years with the students in our area. I 've also been told it has become popular nationwide so it is getting very difficult to get into. You should visit in the spring. It is not the easiest school to get to from the northeast. We combined it with few other southern school tours. Good Luck!

Thought I'd chime in here with an out of state student. I have a daughter who is currently a freshman at Elon and we are from upstate NY. Our youngest is a high school senior this year and has also applied to Elon Early Action. Our Elon student is a Music Theatre major and absolutely loves everything about the school. She has made wonderful friends, has found a group who are not into drinking and they find other fun things to do, she is extremely happy with her classes, obviously particularly the performing arts classes which she currently takes--acting, four dance classes (her choice), piano, and private voice lessons, but also the psychology class and global experience class she is in. She was cast in the fall musical,Cabaret, which we saw last weekend and it also runs this weekend. She is also a minority student (adopted Asian) and has had no difficulty even though the vast majority of Elon students are not. Really couldn't have chosen a better place for her to learn and grow. We hope her sister will end up there too, although she is still exploring her options. Interestingly one of her other top choices is Hobart William Smith, GrantB!
If anyone has any Elon questions, feel free to email or PM me.

Hi everyone! I applied to Elon Early Action for Fall 2008! I'm an out-of-stater, but I really want to go down south.

Oh, and does anyone know when we are notified of Elon's decision? I read on princetonreview.com that Elon had rolling admissions, but I'm pretty sure that's false. I've also heard anywhere from Dec. 15 to Dec. 19. Let me know and thanks!

If you applied early action, you will be able to find out online at exactly midnight of December 19th. In other words, stay up til midnight on December 18th and you will find out. At least that is how it worked last year for my D who is a freshman there. You have to set up an ontrack account. You will get an email telling you your ID and your temporary password. My younger D got hers today. Set up the ontrack account, check to make sure all your materials are in and your test scores are correct. Then log-in on December 19th for early action. I think early decision is December 1, but early action is not the same as early decision.

No rolling admissions. If past practice holds the decision will be there, I swear, about 00:00:01 on December 1. EA is also usually right at midnight of the day they say decisions are available. Don't count on them being early.
