Emory Transfer

InTypicalInTypical 18 replies4 threads Junior Member
I currently go to a small state school in Georgia and I’m planning on applying to Emory as a transfer student (I’m a Freshman). This is the only school I plan on applying to so I wanted to share my application stats for any input/criticism.

Major: Economics (I intend to apply to Goizueta down the line)
College GPA: 3.4 duel enrolled (After this semester I should have over a 3.5 hopefully)
Highschool GPA: 3.0
SAT: 1250
Extracurriculars:
-90 hours Emergency Department volunteering
-over a years experience as an EVS Tech at my local hospital (basically a janitor) which I got after a few recommendations from my ED volunteering
-60 hours of Oncology Unit Secretary Shadowing (I asked charge nurse on oncology floor one night after my shift ended if I could shadow the secretary and it turned into a weekly thing over the summer) organized medical records in chart books when patient is admitted/transferred to floor and taking calls from outside and within the hospital, forwarding patient requests to the on floor techs and nurses.
- Intern at a Care Management company for 3 months - basically data entry of medical equipment, patient info, and insurance info. I’d also have to reach out to different home health agencies to see set up nursing and therapy evals/visits (would just give my boss a word sheet of agencies willing to accept our rates which also covered clients location)
Recommendation Letters:
-One of my EVS Supervisors (already asked)
-Director of EVS (already asked)
-Volunteering coordinator (didn't ask yet)
-One of the Secretaries I shadowed (didn’t ask yet)
-I have a two more but they may be a longshot at this point in time.

I only intend to apply to Emory because it’s only 20 minutes away from my internship, and I feel it is the only school in Georgia that would help give me the opportunities I’m looking for.

I plan on submitting my application when I get my transcript for this semester. Looking at average score stats for Emory mine are on the lower end, so if I don’t get accepted at least I can reapply next Fall without my SAT score and Highschool grades.

PS: On phone browser, so sorry for bad formatting

Your profile does not look competitive for Emory. But apply and see what happens.

I’ll come back here and let you know whether I got in or not. I don’t have the best scores but I’ve busted my butt off trying to make my application more competitive. My strengths are my work experience, volunteering, essays and recommendation letters.

You should understand that, if you reapply next year, you will not be able to apply directly to Goizueta Business School and that would set you back a year. You have to matriculate at Emory College for two semesters before entering GBS.

I dislike "chance me" threads and everyone in the Emory community knows so many qualified applicants who just don't get admitted. Putting all of your eggs into one basket at any of these elite schools may not be a wise risk. You appear to want a career in healthcare management. You should look at all options and determine a roadmap that can get you there under different scenarios.

I don’t plan on reapplying next year for that reason. I am perfectly fine with the school that I am currently attending, so there is no direct risk of me applying to Emory as a transfer. I am applying only to Emory because it is so close to my home. I am hoping my job and volunteer experiences at Emory hospital will make me stand out. Two of the people I asked for recommendation letters are Emory alumns so I’m hoping that also gives me an edge. I understand that it is likely I won’t get in with my scores and average GPA though, and I have kind of a “mental roadmap” of my other options. I don’t really have a desire of applying to other schools because I don’t want to leave my job or internship I have.
